Paul Eluard was born on May 31, 1857, in Paris. His father was a wealthy textile manufacturer. At the age of nine he entered the Lycée des Quatre-Nations where he developed an interest in painting under the influence of Jean Baptiste Camille Corot. He won first prize for drawing at the age of fifteen and first prize for landscape painting at the age of sixteen
In 1878 he became a pupil of William Bouguereau at the Académie Julian under whose tutelage Eluard studied until 1880.
